The New York State Summer School of the Arts, School of Orchestral Studies (SOS) is seeking candidates for the position of Wind and Percussion Director. One of seven four-week summer residential programs administered by the New York State Education Department, SOS offers pre-professional orchestral training for approximately 95 high school students from across New York State. This 50 year old program was begun by Eugene Ormandy as a partnership between the Philadelphia Orchestra, Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), New York State Education Department, and Skidmore College, a partnership continuing to this day in which students work in small groups with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, rehearse at Skidmore’s state of the art Zankel Music Center, attend Philadelphia Orchestra concerts, and perform a final concert on the SPAC stage. The SOS Wind Ensemble supplements the Symphonic Orchestra and consists of approximately 30 high school students of All State caliber, comprised of the woodwind, brass, and percussion sections of the full Symphonic Orchestra.

Position Overview

Working with Artistic Director Dr. Bruce Kiesling and the String Director, the Wind and Percussion Director will work to achieve the mission of the NYSSSA School of Orchestral Studies. The Wind and Percussion Director will select skill-appropriate wind band repertoire and conduct a single 20-30 minute program, adjudicate and place wind and percussion students in chamber ensembles and part rotations for the full Symphonic Orchestra, select skill-appropriate chamber music and manage SOS staff in respective chamber coaching settings, and conduct wind and percussion sectionals for the full Symphonic Orchestra repertoire as needed.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Select wind band and wind and percussion chamber repertoire (in cooperation and with approval from the Artistic Director).
  • Conduct 3-4 SOS Wind Ensemble rehearsals each week, as well as one public concert. Rehearsals are approximately 2 hours long.
  • Coordinate coaching assignments and public performance schedule of all wind and percussion chamber ensembles.
  • Assist the Artistic Director with seating auditions and student part assignments.
  • Serve as Sectional Conductor/Rehearsal Assistant to the Artistic Director as needed.

 

Qualifications

NYSSSA is seeking candidates with vision, passion and commitment to working with talented teen artists. Experience conducting youth wind bands or other student ensembles is required. The ideal candidate should be a woodwind or brass player or percussionist with experience conducting a wind band on the student, collegiate, and/or professional level.

 

Compensation

    The Wind and Percussion Director is provided with faculty housing and a summer dining hall plan at Skidmore College and a stipend of $4,000.
